Created in 1982, the Race Across America (RAAM) is the longest running ultra-distance bicycle endurance competition in the world. It is not a stage race like the Tour de France, where a set distance is covered each day. In RAAM, the starting gun fires on the West Coast and the finishing line is over 3000 miles away, on the other side of the continent.

Competitors in RAAM comprise a wide cross section of cyclists spanning professional cyclists and Olympic athletes to juveniles and septuagenarians. People compete solo or as members of a team. Team Santa Barbara has entered in the 8-person team category. We will race as a relay team, with one rider on the road at all times, day and night. We will ride at maximum effort in segments of about 10 miles or 30 minutes.

In 2007, Team Santa Barbara set the record for 8-person teams aged 60+ with a time of 7 days 7 hours 40 minutes. This year we are determined to finish in 7 days, averaging 18.0 mph.
